TOEFL, one of the world's most esteemed and universally recognized English-language proficiency exams, is set to undergo several significant changes in 2023. These updates aim to enhance the test experience and assist test takers in their TOEFL preparation. ETS, the organization behind TOEFL, has announced a series of improvements to the TOEFL iBT test, with a gradual implementation plan starting from July 26, 2023. The most notable change is the reduction in test duration, making it the shortest among the three most popular English-language tests. The revised TOEFL iBT will now take less than two hours to complete, compared to the previous three-hour duration. To achieve this shorter test time, the Reading section will consist of only two passages, with ten questions for each passage. Additionally, all unscored test questions will be eliminated. The Independent Writing task will be replaced with a more concise and contemporary writing task called "Writing for an Academic Discussion." The test will also feature streamlined instructions and navigation, ensuring a smoother experience for test takers. Another exciting update is the simplified registration process, which will be available from July 2023 onwards. Test takers will find it easier to create an account and register for an available TOEFL iBT test date. Moreover, in select markets, local payment options will be introduced, with plans to expand these options over time. This means that Indian test takers will have the option to pay the test fees in INR, providing greater convenience. Furthermore, TOEFL iBT will offer increased score transparency. Test takers will now be able to see their official score release date immediately after completing the test. Additionally, they will receive real-time notifications regarding any changes to their score status. Amit Sevak, CEO of ETS, emphasized that these enhancements were developed with the utmost consideration for their customers and stakeholders. "TOEFL has been an industry standard for nearly six decades, and these improvements further solidify its position, " he stated.
